Depression is a vast subject - this post will introduce how meditation can help to begin to combat this mind
Over the next few weeks we will look at a variety of new, different and creative approaches .
There are many levels of depression - which means we have to approach the subject from different angles
Meditation can help in general to combat depression as its function is to relax the mind and create Mind Space, which allows the practitioner to have a clearer perspective of their circumstance.
As with all states of mind we are familiar with, depression has to start from somewhere - a particular way of thinking towards occurrences within our life; often depression is triggered by an event, perhaps loosing a job, partner, loved one - we loose confidence, which then opens the door to negative thoughts about our self and our life.
At this point we can retreat from the world and become more withdrawn - or upon advice go to a GP where depending upon his advice he may prescribe medication to assist the flow of serotonin within our brain to get the happiness levels back again.
Meditation isn't necessarily an alternative to medication (although it can be).
Meditation is like taking medicine for our mind - in the early stages of depression it can be very effective for altering our perspective of our life.
As mentioned in posts below it is not so much the power of the circumstance as our state of mind towards the circumstance (yes easy to say!).
Meditation deals directly with our mind and helps to encourage a positive thought process.
For example we can sit down and think in a negative way about our life - looking at the dark, gloomy side of life, if we become familiar with this way of thinking enough then we will slip into a state of depression.
Or we can sit down and think in a positive way about our life - and the potential we have - whatever our circumstance, we can empower our self with the knowledge that we can change.
(for some fun check out the VW video mentioned in the next post today!)
The mind of depression can make us feel stuck in a rut - we can't see the potential we have for change. If we practice meditation then we can see a glimmer of hope on the horizon - yes we can change, we can move forward and let go of the past.
The mind is a very powerful tool - it can make us very happy, likewise it can make us unhappy depending upon our point of view.
More to come on this subject....
