The Internet has changed the manner in which we communicate - this has its pros and cons....
It has made it faster to send our thoughts of mind to one another ( in some places - watch a humble pigeon messenger working faster than the internet).
The old expression talk is cheap comes to mind quite a lot when I look at the dreaded comments section in a Online Newspaper, YouTube Video, Amazon Book Review, Hotel Review.
The idea and concept is great in that there are many views and opinions about a particular object and can help one to decide which way to purchase - such as deciding on a hotel to stay in, or a particular restaurant to visit in a city. The quality of that establishment will shine through in the reviews that are revealed by punters (examples).
In some instances though they are a sound board for discontent, unrest, & negative thinking. The way that modern day educational establishments are set up is to encourage critical thinking - to analyze and dissect, this can be productive if done in an reflective manner. Due to the ability to instantly be able to project ones thoughts and feelings onto the net then it has created in some parts a huge vomit board. A little bubble in which one can safely engage in a virtual release of negativity.
E-mails can be sent with very little thought for the recipient. Just yesterday I received an e-mail of negativity from a person regarding the work that I have been engaged in over the past 18 months. The content of the e-mail was all based on gossip and negativity. The tone, manner and nature of the e-mail would not have come out if that person has seen me face to face - however they were safe behind their computer. Just like the driver in their road rage bubble is safe to clench their fist and shout if they are made to put their foot on the breaks - however in the UK if you walked in front of them in a busy shopping centre and they had to slow down then they would probably say sorry!
Human nature can at times be cowardly - the internet unfortunately encourages this. People say ‘oh its a safe way to communicate’ - to meet a partner, to spend ones time. Safe can be interpreted in many ways. The way that modern society develops in the large part breeds isolation. This isn’t safe, it is just creating a little bubble to live in.
The virtual world is getting closer and closer - from its side its neither negative or positive - like anything it depends on how we engage with it....
