Having high aspirations is often seen as noble and worthy - as mentioned in the previous post it can often lead to disappointment, pretension & denial.
Some say “start where you are” - so where is that?
How to judge “where you are” - who can tell us that?
Only ourself - we have to take a look in - at our mind, try to separate ourself from the material world, its distractions and stresses.
Doesn’t mean rejection, just a loosening of the grip - this brings an immediate relief from stress and agitation.
Its not a case of having to label ourself or judge or assess, just look in, let go and move on.
The highest aspiration is enlightenment, this requires an inward vision. A mind looking to develop inside.
Enlightenment is the accomplishment of our mind to produce its inner fruit. Meditation practice helps to cultivate an environment where we can grow and develop internally. This helps us to move away from worrying about what is taking place outside and focus on inner development.
This was never taught to us unless we were lucky. We have been taught how to construct a CV and develop our material life. What if this doesn’t work to produce material fruit?
Or what if it does work to produce material fruit but yet we are still left wanting?
The way we are educated at school and university is intellectual we never really receive practical advice on how to increase our well being. Well being goes further than a good diet and exercise, although this is important. Well being needs to include what is happening inside.
When our life starts to fall apart then what? Material fruit cannot help us at such times.
The nature of human life is that it will disintegrate - sometimes gradually, sometimes immediately.
Take a bouquet of flowers - they give great beauty for a few days but they gradually start to wilt and wither away until they are useless. The same, although over a longer period of time happens to our body. We can try to deny this and pretend that it isn't taking place. It is. There is a multi billion pound industry fueling the desire to deny our disintegration. Its a powerful force. Its popular. That doesn’t mean that its right or leads to good results....
Take a look in and cultivate the mind
New Years Greetings to all.
January is a funny time - all hung over but full of aspiration. To travel, to improve mentally, physically, to learn a language, to be kinder, to be less tolerant, to be in touch more with current affairs, to be less distracted, to get out more, to stay in more.
Some resolutions are far reaching, some last a few days...others we maintain.
Its a good marker - a new life opens, a blank page, canvas if you like.
A Happy New Year would be good - we wish it upon people and we receive such greetings ourself but how is it possible to have a happy new year?
Will it become happy when we have fulfilled our resolutions?
That may take sometime and who knows some of them may not be achieved or realized then what?
Wait for next year...
What about Happy New Week, Happy New Day, Happy New Hour, Happy New Moment?
The trend lately is not wanting to be happy - positive thinking doesn’t work and makes you more miserable!! It can do - depends on how you approach it.
Happiness seems to depends on certain factors, accomplishment, prestige points. When they are realized contentment will issue forth.
A friend said to me yesterday that they were trapped, with no freedom.
I thought of an analogy of an elephant stuck in mud. How so...
Debts from University, bills to pay each month and commitments at work. Well...make the best of it is, one approach.
Trapped with the hope of churning out siblings who can accomplish much the same.
Its the time in between the lines, in between the sentences, in between the decisions which are often crucial.
The decision to study after school, the decision to get into debt, the decision to push to a career, mortgage, partner, children. These things take place before you realize and then...trapped?
Perhaps; it depends on the view. Freedom from one point of view is limited - however it depends how you look at the situation. Someone with no such responsibilities may have more freedom, it depends how they look at their life and what they strive after.
I met a homeless man at a shelter in the Docklands over Christmas and he was happy with his lot - content. He didn’t strive for anything much. Some people pitied and prayer for him. His aspirations were limited and therefore so was his disappointment.
His Happy New Year - under his nose. Simple...
Working for peace and freedom throughout the galaxy
